Unlike traditional salons with rows of styling stations, Salon Xia features two freestanding hexagonal towers that float within the space, creating open and uniquely oriented stations for each of the twelve stylists. This radial arrangement not only maximizes space efficiency but also provides interesting sight lines and balanced daylighting. The design is 23 percent more space efficient than a typical straight row of stations, allowing for more room for each stylist, circulation, and increased privacy for clients.
The hexagonal shapes are a recurring motif throughout the salon, appearing in various forms such as the reception desk, waiting bench, dressing room, ceilings, and lights. This repetition creates a dynamic visual experience, with changing sight lines and angled reflections as one moves throughout the space. Linear lighting floats as hexagonal halos around the station towers, providing diffuse, neutral, and true color lighting necessary for shadow-free styling and accurate rendering of hair coloring.
In addition to its unique design, Salon Xia prioritizes functionality and convenience. Cabinets at each station conceal the stylist's tools, supplies, and a shelf, while a lack of doors eases movement. The central dressing room, a focal point in richly colored velvet, offers privacy and sound absorption. During events, it can be fully opened to create more space.
The materials chosen for Salon Xia were carefully selected for their durability and resistance to hair coloring pigments. High-pressure laminate, quartz, and powder-coated steel ensure longevity, while larch warms the space and sheer curtains diffuse daylight.
Clay Holden's design for Salon Xia not only meets the practical needs of a hair salon but also creates a visually stunning and inviting environment. By combining innovative spatial organization, unique aesthetics, and functional elements, Salon Xia sets a new standard for modern salon design.
Salon Xia was designed in Los Angeles, California, starting in August 2017, and construction was completed in May 2018. The project spans an area of 144 square meters with a 4.25-meter-high ceiling.
